Long ago Nanny’s hands would sew
Little cotton dresses
From flour sacks I got to choose
When I would wear them...I felt just like a princess.
Long ago her hands
Would slowly brush my dark brown hair
As into her eyes I would innocently gaze
Of this woman so beautiful and fair.

And as I write this…
I want the world to know
How blessed I am to have her in my life
My love and respect for her…
I’ll always graciously show.
Her hands were always there for me
Lifting me up when I would fall
Often times... just touching my face
Or giving comfort in her warm embrace.

You see… this wonderful lady is not just my grandmother
But in my eyes… she was my mother, too
Raising me and loving me in all my days
Even after my own mother… would sadly go away.
I remember, just the other day
Again, holding her hands… touching love
Thinking, does she really know
how much I care for her?
Have I truly said it enough?
For she has been my angel
Surely sent from the heavens above
Always there to help me,
when the times were tough.

And I remember long ago...
When times were hard… money was scarce
Sometimes we didn’t have a lot
Nanny would take me by her hand
Off to town we would go, to choose
among the flour sacks
Made of cotton, with yellow flowers or
even pink polka dots.
Then going home and emptying the flour
Into big old mason jars
Washing the cotton sack
Seem to take eternity... that day
There in my own little world
Heaven didn’t seem that far away.

Now as I look at her,
The beauty can never be denied
I see it in her heart
Her giving hands and her beautiful
sparkling eyes.
Sometimes we forget to give our thanks
For the blessings that are sent to us
Like gentle hearts and guiding hands
And beautiful flour sack dresses.
